What We Measure

I showed up to the gym twice a week.

Checked the scale - no change.

I continued to show up to the gym twice a week. Every week since September.

The weight on the scale still didn’t change.

Still hasn’t. Yet, I’m fitting into my pre-kiddo clothes. Feeling stronger. And able to walk/run for longer… with a new ambition to push myself further.

If I’d reacted to the lack of pound movement (real time data… based on a pretty typical goal folks set), I would have abandoned my weight training early on. In fact, I thought about it quite a bit.

But alas, my determination (and committed dollars to a trainer) said to stick with it. So instead I focused on a different metric - counting the days I showed up each week. With a goal of showing up 2x/week.

All this to say, food for thought: Choosing what you measure matters. Is it a lagging or leading indicator of your success? Does it even align with your ultimate goal? Are you able to recognize when what your measuring isn’t serving you? Or is it time to adjust course?

Discernment makes all the difference.
